On his return from the inauguration ceremony of Petro Poroshenko in Ukraine, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told a French TV channel that EU membership was not in the cards for Ukraine. This was in striking contrast with Pereshenko's own promises in his inaugural address.

"When I talk with my European
colleagues it becomes clear that most of them do not support the idea of
Ukraine joining the EU. It is obvious," he said.
However, according to Mr. Fabius,
Poroshenko's inauguration speech was "obviously pro-European."
Perhaps even too pro-European "than the EU countries wanted," the
minister remarked.
According to Mr. Fabius, none of
his "Western colleagues want Ukraine to join NATO" either, "not
even the Americans."
